The Wisconsin Swing took a team of 16 and 17 year olds to Denver, CO, to compete in the Double Pump Spring Tournament. The Swing began pool play with a 75-71 win over Utah Pump N Run on Friday night. Saturday morning, the team concluded pool play by defeating 2D1 Basketball Academy of Los Angeles 76-71.
Entering bracket play as the 1 seed from their pool, the Swing met the Illinois Wolves. They took care of business down the stretch by finishing the game on a 19-3 run to win 79-63. The Swing proceeded to defeat the Bay Area Warriors (San Francisco) 115-99, erasing a double-digit deficit in the second half. In the round of 16, they took on the Oakland (CA) Rebels and pulled away late for a 81-59 win.
The Swing will compete in the quarterfinals of the 72-team tournament versus the Las Vegas Prospects.
SUNDAY: QUARTERFINALS:
WISCONSIN SWING 84 - LAS VEGAS PROSPECTS 74
SEMI FINALS:
DOUBLE PUMP ELITE (CA) 67 - WISCONSIN SWING 55
*After winning the quarterfinals, Swing families scrambled for an hour and a half to find different flights home. Chip Rank, Josh Gasser, and Kyle Kelm all had early flights. No luck finding new flights meant no luck for a Championship. Rank, Gasser, and Kelm played the first 4 minutes of the semifinal game before having to scurry to the airport. Swing was up 15-6 when the three checked out. The remaining 5 (Zach Ripley, Ben Averkamp, Garrett Schwarz, Chris Seibert, and Derek Braucht) built the lead to 13, but slowly ran out of gas without any subs on the bench. Double Pump Elite eventually won the game by 12.
The Swing team definitely opened some eyes in Denver and across the country with 6 straight impressive wins over some of the countries best 17u teams.
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE GUYS ON AN OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE ON THE NATIONAL CIRCUIT!!
